I've been trying to lose a few pounds that I packed on during a particularly stressful time of my life. I wasn't eating completely horribly, but I was consuming more carbs than what I normally would for maintenance. I've been diligent in staying on low carb for months and my weight has not budged. Fat fasting hasn't even worked. I'm still concerned I may have some thyroid issues, but until my Affordable Health Care kicks in I have no way to get that tested.
In my research of possible remedies to this stall online I've run across the much maligned (in low carb circles) "Potato Hack Diet." Now, I've mentioned in the past that I am sensitive to potatoes, that they make me stall and gain weight, although when I was eating them I loaded them with butter and sour cream. That may have been the key reason why they had that particular effect on me. So, I'm going to experiment. I'm going to try for seven days, but if by the third day I'm not feeling well or I'm extra bloated, I will abandon the experiment. If I get good results by the third day I will carry on through the seventh day. If by the seventh day I feel fine and am seeing weight loss, I plan on going a full 14 days, then reverting back to a low carb/Primal eating plan.
I realize I'm late to this spud party, as this was all the rage/controversy about a year ago. I also realize this may be a disaster, but I'm going to take you all along for the ride so you can see how this little experiment turns out.
Have any of you tried this? And if so, what was your experience?
UPDATE: I ate breakfast late, had two potatoes. Feeling headache-y, sleepy, have heartburn, and major brain fog. Everything in my body is telling me to ABORT. I will comply. I am not diabetic, but whatever other metabolism issues I do have will not allow me to continue further. Back to what I feel best doing! High fat, moderate protein, low carb!

Hope this helps Lisa! I fully believe that we have to experiment now and then and see what works best for us.
ReplyDeleteLisa,
ReplyDeleteI have recently found myself in the same situation. 9 months after a 65lb weight loss I quickly gained back 8. After taking a close look at my diet, I saw that I was falling victim to carb and calorie creep. Exceptions like eating the bun became more frequent, and high fat snacks like cashews and crème were eaten ad-libitum.
All I needed to do was get back on the wagon that brought me to the dance. I know what works for me, and I just have to do it. Weight is coming off, just like before.
Thanks for the support, Amy!
ReplyDeleteTJ, I've been diligent and cut out any of the "carb creep" I had going on, still no results. Something's gotta work, and if this doesn't I'm all the more convinced that I have a medical issue that will need to be addressed. The "carb creep" was exactly what made me gain. Losing it has been a lesson in futility right now.
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! Less than an hour in and this is a big FAIL for me! Ugh, I really feel sick.
ReplyDeletethese re-tests and "fails" just serve to confirm what we concluded when we first went low-carb.... :-) my husband found that when he ditched the dairy products his stall ended. have you tried that?
ReplyDeleteTess, yes. And gave up sweeteners and diet soda. Upped veggies at one point. Went no veggies for a bit. I had no appreciable change after any of it. I'm really thinking my thyroid is out of whack. Thyroid issues run in my family. I just know for sure I won't be trying an experiment of this nature again, regardless of the reason for my stall. It could be a stress issue as well. I've had a number of different things happen over the course of the last couple of years that went above and beyond normal stressors. I may try some deep meditation and perhaps some yoga in the near future.
ReplyDeleteLisa love your statement - "Back to what I feel best doing! High fat, moderate protein, low carb!"
ReplyDeleteI have made this comment on other blogs.....with me I am not a diabetic and over the years have found what suits my body and what doesn't. For me my chosen life style is low carb, high fat and yes moderate protein. My daily carb intake rarely goes above 50 grams per day - today it has been less than 30 carbs.
Should I eat too many carbs it results in headaches, my body seems to treat carbs as a poison which I guess is what they are.
I would recommend reducing carbs/sugar your body will appreciate it, and don't be afraid of good fats. Butter, avocados to name but two!
As always if you do have underlying health problems you may have to alter your diet/lifestyle to suit. We are individual but surely we should respect our bodies and do our utmost to keep them as healthy as we can.
Just my thoughts not everyone may agree.
All the best Jan
Thanks, Jan.
ReplyDeleteI've been low carb for nearly 7 years now, and in that time I've fluctuated weight-wise a bit finding a balance. I typically eat less than 50 carbs a day to maintain (usually 30 or less, most days).
I've never been afraid of fat over this period of time! Butter, coconut oil...I even render my own lard and tallow! Fat is my friend.
To me, nearly from the beginning, I've always felt and proclaimed that weight loss is a happy side-effect of a low carb lifestyle. I am glad to feel better eating low carb, and if this stall remains and I stay where I am I will be content. I'm not obese any longer, I'm just not where I am most comfortable. I'll figure it out. I always manage to. It may take having some tests run this time around, though. I'm okay with that, and I will be eager to find the cause and solution.
